Obama appoints Martin Dempsey as top military officer

U.S. President Barack Obama appointed Army General Martin Dempsey as the top U.S. military officer on Monday.

Martin Dempsey has marshaled the troops in Iraq war was nominated for the top military officer post, the position which will be confirmed by the US Senate. The Dempsey will replace Admiral Mike Mullen as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as he steps down on October 1.

Obama quoted Dempsey as 'one of our nations respected and combat-tested generals' in ceremony at the White House. President made his announcement for the high-profile post as he was heading to honor America’s war dead on a Memorial Day at Arlington Cemetery, Washington.

The nomination of Martin Dempsey in Obama's national security team was the latest one followed by appointment of CIA Director Leon Panetta to replace the departing Robert Gates as defense secretary in April. In place of Panetta Army General David Petraeus was replaced as the chief of CIA.

Obama said that the transactions in the national security team are essential to ensure that they were focusing to stay alert on the upcoming challenges before them. Martin Dempsey has just served one month as Army chief and will be replaced by General Raymond Odierno.

Admiral James Winnefeld, commander of U.S. Northern Command has been appointed as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. President Barack Obama is facing growing pressure to accelerate the troops withdraw from Afghanistan and Obama is preparing to complete a withdrawal from Iraq. The Obama government of administrating is also facing many questions about the U.S. military involvement in Libya.

Shahid Afridi: I quit as International Cricketer

Pakistan all-rounder, Shahid Afridi has announced his retirement that he is quits from international cricket. This is due to protesting against the exclusion as captain and also losing spot in the one-day team and he is considering not returning until the present PCB chairman Ijaz Butt is in term.

Afridi said that, people of the nation love him and shows lot of respect, he doesn't want to lose that respect playing under this board. And also stated the PCB governing board doesn't know who to respect and showed his anger towards the board in his words.

Shahid Afridi described the Pakistan cricket Board set of administrations as 'disgraceful people'. Boom-boom Afridi spoke to news channel that nothing is greater to him than his self-respect; he should be informed under what basis he was removed from captaincy.  He announced his retirement as a protest against board’s decision of removing him as the captain of the one-day team.

31-year-old Shahid Afridi stated that, he will not play international cricket as far as present PCB chairman Butt is in place. He added that when it happens and people want him to comeback he will consider to make return. However, Afridi will continue to play in domestic and league matches.

After the controversy in Lord’s Test against England in last year, Afridi was appointed as the captain of all formats of Pakistan team. But Afridi retried for test cricket and also from test captaincy, continued as captain in the shorter format of the game.

Shahid Afridi represented Pakistan in 325 one day internationals, 27 Tests and 43 Twenty 20's. He scored 9,094 international runs and claimed 416 international victims with his leg spin. Afridi holds the record of hitting most sixes in all one day cricket with 289 and scoring fastest fifty in one-dayer's from 37 balls against Sri Lanka in 1997.
