Ricky Pointing’s Captaincy Called Into Question

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 01:41 AM PDT

Ricky Ponting's captaincy has been called into question after he lost his cool at times and has come under fire and also struggled with the bat during the ICC World Cup 2011 tournament. Currently, he has been thrown into doubt with a report, claiming that he could be axed as 'gutless'. An unnamed official of the Cricket Australia has said that there was stiff opposition at boardroom level to Ponting staying in the job. He added that the position of Ponting as a player has been in trouble.

One of the news agency reported on Wednesday that Ponting is planning for his retirement from the International cricket career after the end of the World Cup in India and also to put an end of his career at English Country. However, his future was the main subject of some speculation ahead of the quarter final match against India on Thursday.

The former wicket keeper of Australia, Adam Gilchrist has starred for the team's World Cup winnings in 1999, 2003 and in 2007, has stated that during the 1999 World Cup, there were rumors on Steve Waugh that he would loose his captaincy, but surprisingly he went on to score a massive unforgettable World Cup hundred. Gilchrist hopes that Ricky will take this as an inspiration from Steve's innings of 120 runs against South Africa in their 1999 World Cup winning moment.

Ricky was warned by the International Cricket Council for damaging a television during their opening match against Zimbabwe, where the team won with 91 runs. During the match against Canada, he collided with his team-mate Steve Smith while he was taking a catch, after taking it he angrily threw the ball into the ground. Later they defeated Canada with seven wickets.

Ricky Ponting's sportsman spirit has come into question during the dismissal against Pakistan. During the review taken by Pakistan, his batting partner, Brad Haddin was angrily confronting Pakistan's Younus Khan. The main aspect is that his average score in five innings is just 20.4 runs per innings.

However, Ricky is being supported by Mike Hussey and Mitchell Johnson upon this issue. Michael Hussey said his views that the best man for the job is Ricky and has also been their leader for the long time. Obviously, he was supported completely by the teammates and they love him as their captain. Whereas, Mitchell Johnson commented that Ricky has copped a fair bit lately and currently he is dealing with it in his own approach. He added that their captain has got the ability to deal with it and he does not think about this, but worried about the next game.
