Radioactive Water Leaks From Damaged Nuclear Reactors

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 11:19 PM PDT

The discovery was made that highly contaminated water is leaking from the damaged nuclear reactor at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Station. A government official said that the company is trying to contain the release of radiation from its nuclear plant should pour adequate water to cool its damaged reactors without an overflow of the contaminated water from the plant.

The Chief Cabinet secretary of Japan, Yukio Edano stated that the effort to prevent the reactors from overheating must be given high priority. But he acknowledged the danger posed by continuing to pour water into them. Engineers were still battling to control the six-reactor Fukushima plant since it was seriously damaged by earthquake and tsunami on March 11.

During a news conference, a nuclear regulator said that the radiation measuring 1000 millisieverts per hour was discovered in the water overflow on the tunnel which is outside the nuclear plant's Reactor No. 2. The deputy director general for the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, Hidehiko Nishiyama stated that the contaminated water leakage was discovered on Saturday where the tunnel leads from the 2nd reactor turbine building.

However, the first three reactors at the plant were located about 240 kilometers north of Tokyo. They are believed to have suffered core damage after their cooling systems were knocked out by the disaster. There is also loss of the backup generators and there by ran the coolant systems and also there is damage of water pumps at the plant.

Desperately, on Monday, the workers were still trying to determine a way to approach the tribune building of the Reactor No. 2 to extract the contaminated water. Despite of that, there is no evacuation of nearly 1000 workers who are positioned at the Fukushima plant after the discovery of the high radiations. Besides this 19 workers have been exposed to the 100 millisieverts radiation since its crisis began.

The pumping out of water was going on at the No. 1 and No. 2 turbine building. But, the deputy general noticed that there is no place to put water pooled in the No. 2 building's basement. The major plan is to extract the water using condenser, but the apparatus is nearly full like the other storage tanks. A comparable challenge is holding up the removal of the collected water in the No. 3 unit's turbine building basement.

Speaking about the Monday's 6.5 magnitude tremor, the residents have been repeatedly worried by aftershocks from the strongest earthquake in the history of Japan. Almost 10804 people were listed in the death toll and 16244 people were still missing after seventeen days of the ruin. The damage cost was topped at $300 billion which has been recorded as the world's costliest natural disaster. The World Bank estimated that Japan could be rebuilt in five years.
